Car Battery Jumper Cables

Car battery jumper cables may come in handy, even if you own one of the new portable car battery boosters. Battery chargers aren’t entirely fool-proof, so you’ll want the cables as a backup in emergency situations. Fortunately, they aren’t expensive, and won’t take up much space in your trunk or in under the seat of your truck.

Jumper cables come in different weights, from 10 to 2 gauge, and they’re made in lengths from 12′ to 25′ long. Longer cables come in handy during those situations when your friend’s car can’t pull up directly in front of you.

The price for a set of car battery jumper cables will run from a low of around 10 bucks for a lightweight set, to almost $100 for a heavy-duty set with 2-gauge cables and a 25-foot reach.

No matter what set you buy, be sure to read the instructions that come with it. This applies equally to the new portable battery chargers that come with built-in jumper cables. The cables must be attached to the correct battery terminals to avoid damaging your car, or worse.

If your battery terminals are covered with crud, you may not be able to see the markings that show you which is positive and which is negative, so keep a rag or brush in the vehicle. You’ll also want a good flashlight in case you need to use your car battery jumper cables in the dark. Hopefully, you’ll be lucky and your set of cables will never need to come out of it’s original wrapper.
